If you have children with dreams of becoming golf superstars, having them attend one of the many summer golf camps staged across the country may be the perfect activity to give them a competitive edge. Not only will they have a valuable opportunity to hone their golfing skills and knowledge of the game, but they will also learn important life lessons on the value of good sportsmanship, teamwork, discipline and dedication. Making friends who already share a common interest is an additional benefit to attending a sports camp. There are many things to consider when deciding to send your child to a specialized camp. One of the most important things the two of you should discuss is whether or not he or she fully understands that the better part of each day will be spent focusing on one specific activity. The ability to concentrate and stay focused is of vital importance when making this consideration. While golf will be the primary pursuit, it's a good idea to discuss with your child the other activities he or she may be interested in while at summer sports camp. Most aim to give your child a true "summer camp" experience, and include group activities like campfires and talent shows in their programming. Diverse recreational opportunities are also available and may include anything from swimming to music to arts and crafts. Cost is another important aspect to consider. Costs can range anywhere from a few hundred dollars to $5,000 and up, depending on the location, length of stay and other variables. If your budget is tight or you feel your child is not ready for an overnight experience, a short-term day program may be your best option, while other children may benefit from an overnight and/or extended-stay facility. Assessing your child's skill level, preferences and goals should also come into play. Specifics to take into consideration should include: the types of skills that will be taught, the quality of the instructors and the courses, and how much time is actually spent on the green. Researching the ratio of instructors to campers is also important, though sports camps typically offer a much higher level of personal coaching than most schools are able to provide. Regardless of the specific golf camp your child attends, the experience should be both fun and educational, as well as a great step towards making his or her pro golf dreams into a reality.
