It can be quite challenging to move overseas. Regardless of why you are moving, you will have to face new situations and learn how to deal with the changes coming your way. There are so many awesome things about the opportunity to move abroad, but it's good to know what challenges may lie ahead so you can be prepared for them as much as possible. 1) Moving your things. Finding a reputable, reasonable and trustworthy moving company is one of the first things you must do when planning to move abroad. Until you have your own furniture, household items and appliances, your house won't really feel like your home. 2) Visas, passports and documents. In order to move overseas, it's likely that you will need these items. Of course, you should research and find exactly what is required from your destination country. In order to live and work in that country, you may need a work visa or special travel visa. You need to inform the local consulate in your destination country as well as ask them questions about moving. By contacting the country's embassy, you can learn exactly what you will need. Other documents may include marriage certificates, divorce certificates, medical certificates and birth certificates. 3) Learning about your new country. Before moving to your destination country, learn as much as possible. The unfamiliarity with local laws and practices is one of the biggest challenges that expatriates face. In some countries, such as the United States, it is quite simple to obtain legal counsel if necessary. Some countries require rules for registering as a citizen, obtaining an ID card, licensing your vehicle and other regulations that you may not know about. 4) Housing and appliances. Before you plan to move to your destination country, be sure to have housing arranged in advance. In order to find the type of housing you need, attempt to get in touch with a reliable person who already lives there to help you. Also, be sure to ask questions about electrical appliances. Your phone and cell phone may not work correctly on foreign soil. You may need a voltage adapter for your computer. Outlets and plugs may be very different in your new country, so ask ahead of time so you can buy things ahead of time and be prepared. 5) Socialization and the weather. You may find the weather to be unbearable at times in your destination country. Prepare yourself for the new climate by reading literature and finding what to expect. It's equally important to socialize and make friends. In order to make this country your new home, you need to make new friends. With friends, you will know you aren't alone in this new country. When moving abroad, the number one thing to remember is to remain flexible. No matter how much you learn and plan ahead, there will be surprises. Enjoy the journey, relax as you can and take time getting settled into your new home!
