Build Your Very Own Wooden Canoe - Live The Dream!

By : Steve Martin

We've all been there - walking down in the country and enviously looking down at the proud owner of a wooden canoe. So, why is it that not many of us actually stand up and say to ourselves 'I'm going to make one for myself'? Well, everyone has their reasons, and usually these reasons are shared by many around the country. How do we overcome these? The answers are here!

Building a wooden canoe is usually considered by many to be a challenging process. Whilst a challenge wouldn't go amiss, everyone wants to be able to complete that challenge. There are many people just like you and I who believe that they do not possess the hands on skills or understanding to complete the building of their wooden boat. If you are one of those people, then it is important that you read carefully:

• First things first - you can do it! That little bit of self-belief is sometimes all you'll ever need to get the job done.

• Remember that you're not alone in your thoughts and feelings. Seek advice from online forums if you want to see the best ways to overcome your challenges.

• Professional boat builders, despite their wealth of experience, will always follow some sort of a plan for even the smallest wooden canoe. Don't consider yourself an amateur just because you're following a boat design plan, you would be a fool not to!

Another reason that many don't even begin thinking about building their very own wooden canoe is because they feel that the time constraints that their life is faced with is too much already, so with boat building added they will have no time free at all. If this is the case for you, there are several things that you must remember:

• Building a boat is meant to be a hobby. As a result, it is meant to be enjoyed. If you spend long periods of your Sunday afternoon on your boat design, the chances are you may become bored. Instead, split your times for construction into a schedule of small blocks over the course of the week, it could be as small as half an hour!

• Building a wooden canoe actually takes a lot less time than many people think. Once you have acquired the appropriate plan and materials, and with a schedule, you'll be finished and setting sail before you know it!

• You may want to get the job done as soon as possible, but consider this - the point of a hobby is to keep you occupied, so whatever you don't rush your boat building experience! When you have built your canoe, get set to build another, challenging yourself more and more each time!
