Haven't you always noticed that life tends to move much easier and more efficiently when things are organized? If your family is preparing for back to school time, you'll appreciate these great tips to get you organized and ready to roll. Make a specific plan for success. As students progress from year to year, their workload gets more and more intense. What worked last year (in terms of homework and studying) may not be a perfect fit this year. Perhaps this year, your child requires a computer, or a dedicated workspace or desk in his or her room, or more time at the library, etc. Be open to new ideas and be willing to make adjustments as necessary. Likewise, the same disciplinary actions that worked last year may not be as effective this year. Remember to keep your eye on the prize: raising a successful, well-rounded, happy child. If you feel it will help, network with other parents of children the same age or older to get helpful hints and ideas. Update at regular intervals. Once the family survives the first week of school, you might be tempted to breathe a sign of relief and return to your old schedule and familiar ways. However, by taking just a few minutes to check in at regular intervals, you can keep grades soaring high, keep wardrobes updated, and keep rooms and closets clean and organized. (After all, you don't want to have to repeat all these steps again during the winter break, do you?) It only takes a few minutes to ensure that things are running smoothly and to make any necessary adjustments. It doesn't have to be anything as formal as a "family conference," (although that format may suit your particular family perfectly); rather, it can be as simple as a five-minute conversation with your student and a quick room inspection. Checking in with your children regularly about what's working and what's not working can help you spot a potential issue before it becomes a full-blown problem. Plus, as an added benefit, the more you engage your children and ask them for information in a non-threatening and truly interested manner, the more likely they are to approach you when they need guidance on a difficult situation. Studies have shown that parents who are involved and engaged in the lives of their tweens and pre-teens wind up with children who are more prone to avoid teenage dangers like drugs and violence. Who knew that making a plan with your child for scholarly success could lead to such remarkable benefits? May you and your student have the most successful year ever.
