Rehabilitating smokers often buy Vermillion River e liquid (also known as e-juice) for use in an electronic cigarette (e-cig or e-cigarette). An e-cig is a device that allows a user to enjoy the pleasant effects of cigarette smoking without exposing themselves and others to the attendant health risks. The devices have three components: a cartridge containing a reservoir of e-juice and a mouthpiece, an atomizer and a power supply or battery. The most common design mimics the appearance of a conventional tobacco cigarette. Others are designed to resemble ball-point pens. Some models are very elegant looking, almost a fashion accessory. Users substitute the electronic cigarette for a conventional cigarette in an attempt to duplicate the smoking experience without the associated adverse health effects. They were first patented in 1963 by a man named Herbert A Gilbert. His product never took off because, at that time, the dangers or smoking conventional cigarettes were not widely known. The e-cig as we know it comes from China. It was developed by a Chinese pharmacist with a company called Golden Dragon Holdings in 2003 and released to market the following year. The process of using e-cigs may be known as 'vaping' and users refer to themselves as 'vapers'. They are very social and, in the United Kingdom, have organized themselves into a campaign to allow vaping in pubs. There hold regular vaping conventions called 'vapefests' and are very active on internet forums. Most preparations contain water, glycerine and flavoring. Nicotine is sometimes added so that the smoker can wean themselves off without experiencing unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. The product comes in an increasing range of flavors. Some of the different flavors that are available are menthol or other mint flavors, candy (vanilla, caramel and chocolate), fruits, coffee and cappuccino. The more adventurous vaper might try a special blend like cherrywood, butter rum and some that mimic the taste of actual tobacco. It is also possible to enjoy vaping from a specially constructed pipe. E-cigarettes are a comparatively new product and so regulations and legislation concerning their use is continuing to evolve. Every country is different, and there are even differences in acceptance among the 50 American states. The American Association of Public Health Physicians endorse their use. They are lobbying the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to designate them as tobacco products rather than medical devices. They argue that they are healthier for both the users and their companions, who are not exposed to secondary smoke. The World Health Organization (WHO) admit that the devices may be safer than other nicotine replacement therapies. Their stance is that they should only be classified as a medical product to the extent that the marketer declares so. In Canada, authorities are slow to accept the devices, whereas Latvia, the Netherlands and Norway allow their use. In Finland, use is limited to nicotine-free preparations.
