Sectional Sofas – Five Reasons Why I Adore Them

Sectional sofas. Ah, music to my ears. A sectional is hip and modern; it's long and sleek, and just a little sophisticated. I grew up in a home with old-fashioned sofas and loveseats, which looked like something out of the Victoria era. The sofas were on the small side, so my siblings and I would always fight for space, and lying down to watch television was definitely out of the question. My parents, as reflected in their sofas, didn't believe in that sort of luxury. So, when my husband and I moved into our new apartment, I insisted on sectional sofas: I wanted to be able to stretch out! I wanted there to be enough room for everyone! Here are five reasons why I adore my sectionals.

1. The Length – Sectional sofas are bigger than your average sofas and loveseats. They are bent or curved at a 90-degree angle and are essentially the length of two or three traditional sofas. With sectionals, you're not restricted by armrests – so if you want to lie down and let your feet hang over the edge, you can. And I do, being the tall girl that I am. Sectional sofas are also great for when you have guests around; there's seating for everyone.

2. The Flexibility – Sectionals can be as adaptable and flexible as you want them to be. Sectional sofas sometimes consist of several different seat sections which means you can split them up if you want to create different seating areas for a party, or if you want to play around with different setups. If you need a spare bed for when you have guests, consider getting a sleeper sofa with a fold-out bed beneath the cushions.

3. The Comfort – The comfort offered by sectionals is second to none. Gone are the days of squeezing into a sofa and having no room to spread out. Sectional sofa cushions are generally firm and flat, so you don't find yourself sinking into grooves. My husband and I love curling up on our sectional sofas to watch television, and our two cats can always be found fast asleep on them, too. They're more comfortable than the bed!

4. The Quality – Sectional sofas are built to last. Our sectionals have heavy hardwood frames, which means they stay firmly in place – nothing's worse than a sofa that takes a squeaky step back when you flop into it after a long, hard day. Make sure you choose cushions with fabrics that will wear well – consider gray or funky orange hues, rather than creams and whites.

5. The Beauty – If you like to make your home look beautiful and update the look of it regularly, then sectionals are for you. I've dressed up our sectional sofa with colorful green and blue throw pillows for summer, and in the fall I'll add warmer-toned pillows, as well as throw rugs and blankets. The possibilities are endless. Sectionals are truly comfortable and practical pieces of modern furniture that you can really customize to suit your personal styles and tastes.
