Three Great Travel Spots On A Tight Budget

Want to see some great sights but keep costs under control? We have scoped out some great destinations that are very affordable in the current economic climate (end of 2011).

Atlantic Canada

The provinces of Canada that are on the East Coast of the country have tons of activities for people who love the outdoors. We are big fans of the kayak rides you can take around the Island of Prince Edward. We also like to do watching of whales near Fundy Bay. You also can try a fantastic hike in the wilderness in the region of the Tomgat Mountains, where you can often see glaciers in the distance.

In 2012 however, the biggest reason to visit this area is the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, which occurred in 1912 off of Newfoundland. This year there is a full slate of events scheduled in Halifax that mark the 100th anniversary of this terrible event. There will be a parade, a film festival and many concerts. Halifax is one of the cheapest places to stay in Canada, with an average hotel price of $140 per night.

Belize

Belize does not get the press of Mexico and Costa Rica, or even Guatemala for that matter. In 2010, twice as many people went to Costa Rica as Belize. Still, Belize has lots of great things about it and you should give it a whirl. First of all, people speak English here. Also, you can see many amazing birds, the incredible Mayan ruins, and also the 2nd biggest barrier reef on earth. Belize is also very cheap to travel to these days.

The best time to visit Belize we think is in May; it is warm enough for the beaches but you are not in the high season yet. You should not stay in San Pedro as the prices are quite a bit higher now. We like the Placencia Peninsula. It is not as touristy and there are wonderful lagoons and many miles of sandy beaches without a lot of people. You also can see the amazing jaguar preserve, which is the first of its kind on earth. The Maya Beach Hotel is owned by an American and Australian couple and the prices are very good at around $85 per night.

San Antonio

This is the 7th biggest city in the US; bet you didn't know that did you? There is a huge amount of construction going on in this bustling Texas town. There are many more miles of walking and bike paths and also many news cafes and shops.

You now can rent a bike almost anywhere in the city for $10 per day. Rates for rooms are 4% less than 2010 so you can really get some good prices these days. We recommend coming here in September. It is hotter than the popular months of April and May, but there are less crowds.

We hope that you can take advantage of some of these great destinations on a low budget this year!
