Top 3 Great Places to Visit on the Cheap

Want to see some great destinations and not break the bank? Take a look at our hot picks for 2012!

Poland

There are new airports sprouting all over this Eastern Europe country as well as plenty of big hotels coming in. The big reason for this is the UEFA 2012 soccer tourney is coming soon. A great time to travel here is right after the sporting events wrap up. You could easily see prices drop 20% after the soccer tourists leave. The same thing happened in South Africa after the World Cup soccer tournament.

The best time to visit is in September, just after the summer tourists have left. But September still has plenty of great weather. It will be quiet and cheap at this time.

Taipei, Taiwan

Taipei has great restaurants, lots of new hotels, mountains and great beaches. There also is now a very nice and cheap bus service. You also can take a great excursion to Sun Moon Lake that has a ride by cable car, a tour by boat and you also can rent a scooter. The rooms here are still quite inexpensive; they are about 10% less expensive than in 2009.

The best time to come here is in October and November when the heat and humidity of summer has passed Taiwan, and there is not much rain.

These days you can book a flight from San Francisco to Taipei for about $1,000.

Kansas City

Yes, this is a nice tourist destination! There are many art centers and museums that are opening here. They have a new performing arts center that is amazing. It now hosts a ballet, opera and symphony. There also is a very nice arts district with more than 70 galleries. And the prices here are still very Midwestern. That is, nothing like New York City.

You should try to visit Kansas City at the end of September. The weather is great and the crowds have left. The Q Hotel is known as the first green hotel in Kansas City. The prices on airline tickets to Kansas City are also very cheap. You can fly here from New York for less than $300, and for about $150 from Houston.

Athens, Greece

All hell is breaking loose in the Greek economy but there are tons of great travel deals for this gem of the ancient world. Athens has dropped more than 10 spots on the most expensive cities in the world list. Hotel prices are down 5% all over Greece and they are down 15% in Athens. You also can catch a day pass on the city metro for only $5.

We like to go to Athens in April and May when the weather is great and the tourists few. Prices on airline tickets can be volatile; expect to pay about $1100 flying in nonstop from New York.

As you can see, seeing great parts of the world does not have to break the bank. If you choose your destination carefully, you really can save a lot of money!
