If you are reading this, chances are that you are interested in becoming a business success. Despite the long hours, hard work, and uncertainty of entrepreneurial pursuits, thousands of people every year leave their jobs to set up a business on their own. Are the qualities that make a successful entrepreneur something that can be learned, or are they simply a gift that certain lucky people possess?
When asked for the secret to their success, almost any businessperson will give the same answer, hard work, focus, and tenacity. While these appear to be qualities that some people possess to a greater degree than others, they can certainly be developed in anyone who is sufficiently motivated. A willingness to put a tremendous amount of work into a single goal is not a quality that is inherent at birth, you simply have to want it enough.
Of course, having that drive is not a guarantee of success. Those who tell young people, or people just starting out, that they are certain to succeed, are living in a dream world. Particularly in the difficult economy of the last few years, small business success is anything but assured, even for the most driven and focused of entrepreneurs. What can be said with more certainty is that if you don't try, you won't succeed. A willingness to accept a large dose of risk is necessary for any business venture.
Skills in marketing, advertising, promotion, and product development will not be found in any newborn child. These are the result of education, and are necessary for any serious businessperson. Very few small children are small business consultants, or savvy in the intricacies of succession planning. All of these things need to be acquired through years of education and increasing experience.
It is the underlying personality traits that allow someone to make it through these difficulties that may or may not be inherent, depending on who you ask. Determination, intelligence, drive, and focus appear to vary widely in individuals, beginning at a very young age. However, whether these traits are determined before birth, during the nurturing process, or even in adulthood is irrelevant to the more important fact that they can be developed, strengthened, and improved in anyone with sufficient motivation. Each of us has no choice but to work with what we are given, whether those traits were given before birth, or developed over a lifespan.
Clearly, successful businesspeople come from a wide variety of backgrounds, and exhibit radically different personality traits. Some were born into privilege and received every possible assistance on the road to success, while others overcame great obstacles with very little help. There is no denying that luck plays a greater role in this than most of us would like to admit. The secret is to do the best you can with what you have been given, and to make luck your friend.
