Costly Design Mistakes That Might Render Your Business Cards Useless

Company and personal business cards are necessary tools for anyone who wants to create a professional image for themselves or their company. If you went to a business meeting and someone wrote their contact information on a piece of paper would you take them seriously? What if you went out for a business lunch and they handed you a napkin with their name, email, and phone number scribbled on it? Chances are you would not take them seriously and they would lose your business or investment.

Even though most business communications take place through email and the internet it is still important to have a custom printed business card to hand out to potential business contacts. Today's business world is highly competitive so the design and overall appearance of your business card is very important. Here are some of the most common mistakes people make when they are designing new business cards. While the design of your card is very important, the very first thing you need to do when you are designing your business card is triple check that all the information you are providing to your graphic designer is correct. Handing out business card that include inaccurate information will make you appear unprofessional and even worse could make it very difficult for people who are interested in supporting your business ventures to contact you.

In addition, handing out business cards that have information crossed out and corrected by hand will disturb the flow of your cards overall design and again make your cards appear unprofessional. Would you want to invest in someone who cannot even successfully oversee the creation of a business card? Once you receive the proofs of your new card design you will want to review the information again to ensure that the graphic designer did not make a mistake during the design process. Once the information is correct, you will want to work with your designer to create and alluring and compelling design for your business card. Think about what you are promoting with your business card? Who are you trying to appeal to? What is your brand about?

The answers to all of these questions will affect the look of your custom business card. Color plays an integral role in communicating your company's brand. The colors used to promote a children' toy company are very different than the colors you will want to use if you are running a luxury hotel. Color is a strong tool that will help you define and promote your brand. Think about large companies you know, banks, fast food restaurants, and phone companies, have all successfully used color to punctuate their brands. If your company has an existing logo or other art work, including it in full color on your business card will make a huge impact. The font you choose for your business card is also important. There is a very fine line that must be walked between creativity and being able to read the information on your custom business card.

Many novice business card designers make the mistake of choosing a unique font that looks great full screen on their computer, but when it is printed to scale on a small business card it becomes illegible. The most important part of a business card is its practical use, providing contact information to people who can potentially help you grow your business. If you become lost in the creative process you may forget that you are designing something that needs to function. Let your creativity run wild when designing the graphics for your card just make sure that you reign it in when you are choosing a font to use for the cards most important information.
