Thank goodness the beauty industry has recognized that filtering salon air is crucial to maintaining the good health of staff and clients. Here are 5 important features that an effective purifier must have and why. Carbon Filters Are Best For Chemicals---There's no sense inventing the wheel about which filter is best for removing airborne chemicals. Carbon is renowned for its ability to clear the air of airborne chemicals such as the ones that are likely to off-gas from many salon products. And even though carbon is really effective at eliminating gaseous pollutants, it needs help with the volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) that many salon procedures produce. Enhancing the carbon filter with an additive of potassium iodide further increases its ability to clear the air of chemicals that can cause eyes to burn, throats to hurt, and heads to ache. The short term side effects of inhaling these chemicals are unpleasant to say the least. The long term effects of breathing these chemicals for a prolonged period of time that can be the case when working in a nail or beauty salon can be even scarier. HEPA Filtration Is Best For Particles---High efficiency particle arresting (usually abbreviated as HEPA) filters are best at removing small to microscopic particles. Designed to trap 99,997 out of every 10,000 airborne particles that are .3 microns or larger it is an awesome filter to have cleaning your salon's air. This type of technology is ozone free, and does not used ionization to clean. Rather it simply traps particulates and sends loads of fresh, clean air out into your shop for all to breathe. Increasing the amount of fresh air everyone breathes makes everyone feel better. And there's no down side to that. Split Capacitor Motor Is Best For Continuous Cleaning---The best thing your cleaner can do is clean all the time. The only way for a purifier to do that is to be equipped with a motor that is designed for continuous high revolutions per minute meaning long life duty. This type of motor is called a permanent split capacitor. The advantage to you is that it can clean while you're there, and while the salon is closed for the night. This means everyone who enters in the morning will be greeted by fresh, clean air that is free from chemical smells left over the procedures done a day or two ago. Pre-Filters Prolong The Filter Life---These relatively inexpensive filters are like money in the bank. When you read the technical specifications and find that a unit has these, you are more likely to get years (as in 3to 5) of service. These filters trap big and medium size particles so they don't needlessly clog the HEPA. These pre-filters can be vacuumed from the outside and can be replaced very cheaply. Portable Air Cleaners Give The Most Options---Since most cleaners work by pulling in air closest them first, being able to move the cleaner on casters closer to where a particularly smelly procedure is happening is a real advantage. The other advantage is that you can determine whether it runs all night as well as the filtration speed. With a built in air filter in a space that you may not own, those options are seldom available to you as the tenant. With a portable cleaner that you own, you know that clean air is always as close as the nearest outlet. And you can have healthy air whether you are moving across the room or across the country.
