Why Kids Should Learn Martial Arts

Many parents encourage their children to participate in team sports and other social activities. Playing T-Ball, baseball, soccer, cub football and other sports can be hard on kids who aren't the very best at a sport. Sometimes alternative activities actually provide children with a more rewarding experience because everyone gets to spend time training and playing and no one ever needs to be benched.

Is Your Child Ready to Learn Martial Arts?

Age is a key factor in determining whether or not your child is ready to begin training in the martial arts. Generally, students should be motivated to work independently. Some schools take children as young as four or five years old. If you aren't sure whether your child is ready, you can give it a try for a couple of sessions. The instructor may encourage you to postpone lessons, or you may discover that your child excels at the program.

When looking for a school, find an instructor who works with children and has a lot of experience. Teaching youth brings a new set of challenges that adult instructors may not be able to deal with well. Check the instructor's qualifications and certifications and try to find someone who can relate to your child. Your child should like his or her instructor, but he or she should also show respect at all times. Boys and girls can both benefit from martial arts training.

Find the Right Class

There are many different varieties of martial arts like, Aikido, Jujitso, Tae Kwon Do, Karate and Kung Fu. Each one emphasizes a different aspect and focuses on a different set of moves and techniques. Some are more appropriate for students who are a little older. If you have any questions about whether or not your child would be a good fit for a certain discipline, talk with an instructor. Many students benefit greatly from sporting events and competitions, while others prefer simply to be students and to learn on their own. Find a program that fits with your child's learning style and personality.

Characteristics of Children Who Learn Martial Arts

Kids develop a number of strong character building traits while they practice martial arts.

Self-Discipline. Children must pay attention to detail, accept repetition and commit to regular practice which instills in them a sense of self-discipline.

Self-Confidence. Each time a child complete a new skill or advances to a new level, his or her confidence grows.

Physical Fitness. Parents are always looking for ways to encourage healthy and active habits. Martial arts training is fun, but it also gives kids a great workout and help them commit to life-long healthy habits.

Self-Motivation. Children are often most excited to track their own progress as the work their way up the ranking system. Each time they receive another belt for their hard work, kids find the motivation to make it one step farther. They work hard to achieve steady progress and learn to see how they are responsible for their actions.
