In order to be stress-free, parents must learn some tips on how to get a newborn to sleep longer such as: create a routine, sing a lullaby, keep your baby dry, give a warm bath, and cuddle safely.

A newborn is a delicate creature that needs to be looked after nearly every single minute of the day. Parents sometimes get frustrated because things can be very unpredictable. Sleep is one common concern parents usually find very challenging because their baby's sleep schedule will change from time to time. To lessen the burden on the parents, some things needs to be done to keep the baby asleep for longer periods of time, including:

Create a routine

If you want your baby to sleep in a consistent manner, try creating a routine by putting him to bed at exactly the same time every day. This will eventually develop into a pattern that is constant and unfailing. Aside from the time, a routine must consist of a series of activities such as bathing, feeding, and cuddling. All these things, when done properly, may assist babies to fall asleep and stay asleep longer.

Sing a lullaby

Most, if not all babies, find lullabies soothing. Every time they hear something that seems like music to their ears, they tend to relax until they become sleepy. However, aside from singing, listening to music or the soothing sounds from a white noise machine may also contribute a lot to keeping the baby still and unruffled.

Keep your baby dry

One most common cause of sleep disturbance in babies is a wet diaper. Constant friction may result in the development of rashes or even skin maceration. The baby's diaper must be closely monitored to prevent such occurrences. Being soaked for prolonged periods of time can bring about discomfort and restlessness. You can expect frequent interruption during sleep regardless of the time of the day when the baby's diaper is wet.

Give a warm bath

A warm bath can be a good way of encouraging a baby to fall asleep. Since the warm water increases blood circulation within the body, the bath may help flush out toxins and waste products, which can be a potential source of uneasiness. This will lessen tendencies of waking up in the middle of the night due to bloating or other signs of distress.

Cuddle safely

Babies feel safe and secure when hugged tightly and close to its mother's body. When babies feel comforted and loved they have less anxiety caused by physical discomfort. Knowing that they are in good hands is already a big consolation for newborns because they can simply forget anything and concentrate on what they enjoy doing, which is sleeping.

Whenever babies experience sleep disturbances, make sure you know how to identify the cause. Feeding may not always be the solution, so you must be able to recognize your baby's needs and address them accordingly. Remember to individualize and not generalize.
