Most couples have been living together for some time before deciding to marry formally for some reason. Therefore wild celebrations about saying goodbye to one lifestyle and welcome to another are not really justified. However many people do not need very solid reasons to organize a week end celebration with friends. The celebration of marriage used to be about extended family relationships. The situation has altered now and the emphasis seem to be on friendship rather than relatives. From this perspective the city is a good place to organize a free for all of friends. The cliche serves well to describe the ambiance of a city where people come from all over the world to pursue purposes that are as varied and diverse as a complex echo-system. In the busyness an individual is inconspicuous and feels free to do what he would not consider doing in a more circumscribed environment. A stranger may trudge through the streets oblivious to what is on offer if he arrives in an unplanned way in the early morning. The streets are empty and the tube stations closed. Occasionally a door opens and light floods out. Life goes on behind doors and walls but the visitor who has not planned ahead may remain unaware of what is available. Possibilities are so plentiful in London that there is a danger of what psychologists sometimes call displacement activity. Part goers could spend the entire week end staring into a glass of flat beer in a dark pub and go home having missed what might have been.
