Reasons to Learn Self Defense

Self defense is important for individuals of any age or background, and there are several reasons why everyone should learn self defense in one form or another.

Let's start with the obvious. You can learn to protect yourself and maybe even your loved ones in the event that someone tries to physically harm you. Every day you read horrible stories in the paper or see stories on the news about how someone else has been raped or assaulted. We all tend to think that these things won't happen to us, but the truth is that we don't know for sure. Being prepared is the smart thing to do.

The next reason you should learn self defense? Self-confidence. Research has indicated that people who enroll in self defense training experience a rise in their own self-confidence. There are a few reasons for this including an increase in physical activity which helps you tone muscle and lose weight. Plus, when you feel competent enough to defend an attacker, you gain a sense of self-assurance that spills over into other aspects of your life like your relationships and your career.

Decreased crime is another good reason to learn how to defend yourself. Did you know that people who are trained to defend themselves can actually prevent a crime from occurring in the first place? When you are aware of your surroundings and you walk confidently, you actually send signals to an attacker that you are not a good target. You reduce your chances of ever being the victim of a violent crime or assault.

Reduce stress and sleep better at night. Participating in physical activities can calm you down, reduce your blood pressure and help you sleep better every day which translates to a more energized and productive day for you.

Who Benefits from Training in Self Defense?

Men: Exercise is good for everyone. Reduce stress and find ways to build and strengthen your muscles with training in martial arts or other disciplines. Participate in a class as a way to socialize or spend quality time with your family.

Women: Women are often susceptible to sexual assault, and learning self defense can help you feel empowered and prevent you from becoming the next victim of rape or theft. The self-confidence you gain through your training program can help you in other areas of your life too.

Children: Children as young as four years old can participate in martial arts and other defensive training courses. It's a great way to make friends, establish healthy exercise habits, and build self-esteem. In addition to physical training, self-defense programs can also help youth find effective ways to deal with anger, stress, and other threats like bullying and child predators.

Seniors: More and more assisted living facilities are teaching seniors how to defend themselves. It's great for the mind and body, and it's easy for recreation directors to set up classes as a routine part of their activities calendar. Modified techniques may be needed.
