Everyone goes to Virginia Beach to swim and lie on the beach. There is nothing wrong with that, but tourists are always surprised that there is more to do here than just that. The fact is that this city has so many things to do, you could spend weeks here. It never ceases to amaze all of the guests that come to enjoy the beach that there is so much more offered here. There are very many interesting events and other attractions worth your time. Some of them are below. One of our favorites is the Beer Festival that is held every October. Can you think of a better way to spend a few days than to try a bunch of different great beers and sitting on the beach or strolling on the boardwalk? Usually there are more than 50 types of beer available. These are craft beers, which means they are brewed locally by enthusiasts. This isn't the stuff that you can buy at a grocery store in your town. They are very unique and tasty and all are made at small breweries in the region. Serious beer connoisseurs make these microbrews. You see, to get the exact flavor, color and fragrance, you really have to work very hard through trial and error to find the best recipe. Some brews that have been here in the past include Red Hook Starr Hill, Dogfish Head, St. George, and more. You will find beer types that include Indian pale ale, lagers, stout, cream ale and fruit beers. With your ticket you get unlimited samples and a souvenir glass to take home with you. The wonderful Virginia Arts Festival at the great Virginia Beach and in many surrounding towns is also very much an enjoyable event. It has been bringing top artists from around the world here since 1997. It was brought into being by the fathers of Norfolk to promote the arts in the area, but Virginia Beach is also a site for part of the festivities. One of the big parts of the Festival is music. You will find all sorts of bands and ensembles here, including great jazz, dance, reggae, Caribbean, western/country and good old rock. There also are many comedians that come here, and sometimes there are international celebrities and famous groups. Some in the past included the very famous Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, the elegant Russian National Ballet, Bela Fleck and the classic singer and actress Liza Minnelli. The Festival is a lot of grand entertainment always, but the festival also does much to suppor new up and coming artists. In 2011, there were newer artists including the talented Joshua Bell, the very special Dance Theater of Harlem, Ralph Stanley and also the very popular Jane Krakowski. Another similar festival is the Virginia Highlands Festival, which started way back in 1948. This festival has many arts and crafts shows, and there also is tons of entertainment and music on hand. You also will be able to see many writers, lecturers and performing artists. We hope that you have learned that there is a great deal more to do here than to just sweat on the beach. Take a drive down to VA Beach and enjoy one of these great festivals!
