It's the perfect destination when you're looking to recharge your batteries. But when it comes to finding a hotel room in the peak season, the pickings can be slim. Before giving up on your ideal weekend, consider seeking out a last-minute vacation rental. Condominiums, apartments and homes are often rented months in advance, but with a little sleuthing you could find yourself in a luxurious beachfront villa for a fraction of the going rate. Many people don't know that spur-of-the-moment home or condo rentals can provide more comfortable accommodations than hotels - at an equal or lesser price - when booked with little or no advance notice. The trick is how to find them. Seasonal properties boom with their locale. For instance, condos in ski areas are tough to find during the winter, and landing a lakefront cabin in the summer can be next to impossible. These same condos and cabins are often vacant during the off-season, and a property manager would rather have someone renting it - even for next to nothing - than have it sit empty. During the summer, beachfront properties can be hard to find, but it's certainly not impossible. Cancellations occur and new units open up suddenly. By checking online and making a few calls, you can land a lavish, furnished home with all the amenities of a boutique hotel, with the privacy of your own home. Browse online for property management companies for accommodations in Destin. Don't waste time with email; phone them directly and inquire about cancellations or openings. If they tell you they're booked, ask them to call you if someone cancels or to give you referrals for other properties that may be available. If you can't find your dream rental this way, don't give up just yet. Call the Destin Area Chamber of Commerce or Florida's Emerald Coast Convention and Visitors Bureau. Ask if they know of any local deals. With access to local business owners, they might have an insider's track on a great bargain. Destin offers just as much ocean-side fun and scenic beauty in the fall and winter as in the summer - but without the crowds. If you're looking for a place to kick back before or after the hectic holiday season, a spacious beachfront home with sunset views and long quiet beaches is waiting just for you.
