Effective Particle Air Purifiers---4 Filters They Must Have

By : Debbie Davis

Indoor particles come in all shapes and sizes and an effective air purifier should have a canister that contains numerous filters that are able to eliminate them. Here are 4 filters that an effective particle-removing air purifier should have.

Large Particle----This is a money saving filter for any air purifier. It stops big particles with a relatively inexpensive filter. The cost to replace them is minimal, and they generally range from $24 to $30. This prolongs the life of the more costly HEPA filter.

This type of filter will probably make the most noticeable and immediate difference because it will take out the particles you can see such as dust, and hair from both humans and pets. This allows the HEPA to remain unclogged so that it can remove microscopic particles effectively.

Medium Particle---Designed to remove particulates such as mold and mildew spores and pollen, it can really make a difference in how well those who are allergic or asthmatic feel indoors. Since avoiding the trigger is still one of the most effective ways to manage allergies, removing the allergens can drastically reduce the number and intensity of flare-ups. That mean an increase in your quality of life.

HEPA---Every cleaner that aims to eliminate particles should contain this type of filtration. High efficiency particle arresting (HEPA) filters are designated as such because they can remove 99,997 out of every 10,000 airborne particulates that are .3 microns or larger. A micron is defined as one millionth of a meter so it's clear to understand the depth of filtration that this filter makes possible.

Carbon Cloth---This type of filtration was originally developed by the British Military to combat chemical warfare, and its make-up allows it to serve a dual purpose. Because it is made of carbon it is able to remove gaseous pollutants such as smoke, odors, and noxious chemicals. But because it is woven like a cloth, it gives additional protection against particles as well.

Since particles come in all sizes, a purifier should contain a canister of filters that can address the wide range of particles size. Pre-filters are an excellent indication that a purifier will address particles of many sizes and the presence of a HEPA in the canister confirms that it is a serious and effective solution for particle removal.

The last thing to look for is a guarantee on the filter's ability. Any manufacturer who is able to stand behind their filter for years rather than months is an indication of the effectiveness that you can expect from the cleaner.
