Once upon a time, finding effective heating and air conditioning was not so easy. Keeping warm proved to be very difficult, involving constantly adding layers to the person's outfit. Keeping cool meant constantly opening doors and windows in order to achieve an effective cross ventilation breeze. Nowadays, there have been so many innovations in the heating and air conditioning realms that it is almost unbelievable. Revolutionary products available today include such ingenuous devices as two stage furnaces, variable speed heat pumps, continuous fans, electronic air cleaners, built in humidifiers, set back thermostats, and ultraviolet cooling coil sterilization. Two stage furnaces are an idea which has been sorely lacking for far too long. For places that suffer from cold winter climes, there are still a significant eighty percent of the days which prove to be mild. Furnaces which are able to idle down to a lower heating capacity are far more efficient. In the first stage, also known as low fire mode, such furnaces only utilize about sixty-eight percent of their full heating capabilities. This permits them to run more silently, slower, and efficiently. When the colder days hit, a second stage increases the flow of fuel so that the blower is able to rapidly ramp up to full power and speed. Variable speed heat pumps are designed to eliminate or at least reduce cycling on and off efficiency losses through following the load continuously and utilizing variable speed motors. This is important because electric forms of heat pumps constantly lose efficiency in the cycling off after a desired load has been met. After the heat pump turns itself on again, the compressor is forced to reestablish pressure differences between the high and low sides every time. The heat exchangers must be up to operating temperatures. Continuous fans turn out to be the most efficient means of ventilation. This is because the air in a room is continuously refreshed, as the name suggests. In rooms which are heavily used, or that do not possess any rapid form of ventilation, this proves to be extremely important. The majority of modern furnaces now contain a setting for low speed and continuous operations, as do a number of newer air conditioners. Electronic air cleaners prove to be the most technologically advanced and simple to utilize solutions for significantly improving the air quality indoors. They catch and filter as much as ninety-eight percent of all airborne particles which go through the system. This ensures that the air is cleaned in advance of being distributed to the rooms in the house. Built in humidifiers are a revolutionary idea in controlling humidity levels in a home or office. Such a built in humidifier has a humidity sensor. When the optimal humidity levels are reached, then the humidifier switches itself off. Set back thermostats are those thermostats which are programmable. When a thermostat reaches a pre-set temperature level, then the temperature is automatically adjusted without needing to have a user present. As an example, in the season where heat is required, the temperatures are reduced for times when no one will be present. Similarly, in cooling seasons, the temperature is increased for those times when no one is around. Ultraviolet cooling coil sterilization is a technology which permits air passing by to be decontaminated. This device is able to be mounted in a range of configurations. Plenum walls can host them, or multiple fixtures may be attached to such frame assemblies which run the length of cooling coils or supply ducts.
