5 Ways To Improve Your Learning

By : Debra Smith

Traditional methods of teaching had us sitting in rows, memorising tables or sums and scaring us with punishments if we failed. However, modern teaching treats the world as just one big outdoor classroom - here are a few different way to learn.

Repetition

Repetition is one of the most boring yet conventional ways to learn and has limited success. The idea is that by continually repeating a phrase, a piece of text or a series of numbers it will eventually sink in. Of course, the only skill that is learnt by doing this is the ability to remember - which is admittedly useful - and the application of the knowledge is somewhat questionable. How much good this has done children in the past is also open to debate.

Make It A Story

Everyone loves to hear a story and they are one of the most engaging ways to learn new information. The Bible is in essence a code of how we should live and has been presented to us as a succession of stories one after the other that are very easy to remember. Had it just been a list of commandments (and remember, even they are presented in a story) we may well have struggled to learn the bible's teachings and the world may have been even more anarchic than it is now.

Make It A Game

Just as everyone loves a story everyone loves playing games. If you can make whatever it is you are trying to learn into a game then you'll be very capable of taking in the important parts. Of course, playing games themselves, understanding how rules work and also how to exploit those rules and looking for patterns in play can develop a host of skills that not everyone would be aware of had they just tried to learn the information through repetition.

Get Outside

This suggestion isn't that you misbehave so much that you are ordered out of the classroom! By changing environments we are often much more open to new ideas and much more receptive to what we are learning. Furthermore, in the science subject in particular, we can actually get practical hands on experience of what it is that we are trying to learn and this can be very effective.

A Different Environment

Traditional classrooms are made of stone or brick however in warmer countries classes can take place in fabric structures. This means that the outdoor heat is utilised and pupils gets more fresh air to stimulate their brains.

So you see, there are plenty of ways of learning beyond just staring at books and trying to remember strings of information, and these methods can also teach us more skills as well.
