For many, sleep deprivation is a way of life. Sleep is often the first thing that is sacrificed when an individual's or family's schedule becomes hectic. For many individuals, sleep deprivation is the norm. Adults need 7-8 hours of sleep each night, but they may only be getting between 4-6 hours. While one can become accustomed to functioning on very little sleep, sleep deprivation can actually be quite harmful to one's overall health. Sleep deprivation can negatively impact cognition, motor performance, and mood. Sleep in an important and necessary part of our daily routine and should be given the priority it deserves. Sleep helps us to maintain and repair both our bodies and our minds. These vital processes occur throughout the sleep cycle, and are essential to our physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

The Physical Benefits of Sleep -

There are many ways in which sleep is physically beneficial to the body. During sleep, the body will produce additional protein molecules. These protein molecules will be used to repair the damages sustained by the body from things such as infection, pollutants, and stress. When the body is fighting a cold or infection, the immune system is hard at work. The immune system is responsible for releasing a sleep-inducing chemical, which helps the body to rest and conserve energy. By conserving energy, the body is better able to defend itself from attack by foreign invaders. In addition to sleep, during the cold and flu season, which is quickly approaching, individuals may also benefit from an influenza vaccine. Getting the recommended amount rest along with flu vaccines can help the body stave off the flu virus.

The Mental and Emotional Benefits of Sleep -

Sleep deprivation can cause individuals to have poor judgment and slowed reaction times. Individuals may be more likely to be involved in accidents or make rash decision that they may later regret. Concentration and memory are adversely impacted by sleep deprivation as well. Furthermore, when individuals are sleep deprived they tend to be less emotionally stable. Small events in their lives can appear monumental, causing undue stress, anxiety, worry, or frustration. Lack of sleep can cause a myriad of problems that could be avoided.

Sleep for Weight Loss?

Adequate sleep can help reduce the effects of infection and stress as well as increase one's concentration, memory and judgment. Additionally, adequate sleep can also aid in weight loss. In the event a body is sleep deprived, it tends to crave for foods rich in carbohydrates and fat. Ensuring adequate sleep helps to keep food cravings under control by maintaining a normal hormonal balance. Controlling one's appetite through sleep is just another of sleep's many benefits.
