Budgeting Summer Fun

If it feels like budgeting is a year-round chore, you're right! Watching your money has to be done 12 months a year, one day at a time-and that includes the summer. If you've not planned ahead, here are some last minute ways that might help you save a few dollars on your summer expenses.

First, make a list of the events that you have to attend. 'Tis the season of graduations and marriages-two expensive events, by any account. Make sure you've accounted for all of them, and try these approaches to keeping your costs in line.

How many weddings are you attending? Gifts, new clothes, showers, stags & does and other celebrations can take a chunk of change out of your pocket. Be realistic about how much money you have available to spend. If you have to, consider picking up a second job to cover those extra costs.

Is someone in your family graduating? Plan a celebration at home, and share costs for a really great present that doesn't break any one person's bank. If several family members are graduating, have a shared celebration that also keeps costs down.

Do you have children going to summer camp or taking special sessions? Costs for kids' summer camps can be crazy. See if you can volunteer your time in exchange for a cheaper (or maybe even free) week for your child.

Are you thinking about a vacation this summer? Consider scaling it back, or even taking a "staycation" instead. That's where you and the family stay at home, and plan all kinds of home-based activities that keep the budget in check. Day outings to the library that include picnic lunches, or walking tours of interesting neighborhoods can be great ways to pass the time. Oh-and turn off your phones, and leave voice messages that say you're away-to make it a "real" vacation.

Hold yard sales, garage sales, home Flea Markets, even lemonade and cookie sales, then use the money you make for a special outing-maybe a night out at the movies that includes treats, or mini-golf, or some other outing that might otherwise be a bit too expensive for the family.

If you do plan to travel, plan your trip out, and either camp or look for places that offer discounts. Do carry your own food. Even breakfasts out and coffee on the road can add up fast. Drive slower, too, and remember that the slower you go, the more you save on fuel costs.

Summer can sometimes be a real hole for costs if you haven't planned them out, and end up spending in a rush for unexpected gatherings and celebrations. This year, before you spend, budget for all the events and summer outings to keep your costs in control.
