British fathers need to take practical courses and learn how to help around the house, according to a new investigation. Research by thebabywebsite.com found that 80 per cent of mothers said that their partner does not lift a finger while at home and neglects to undertake any DIY house improvement projects. An increasing number of dads may need to enroll on carpentry courses, tiling courses and plastering courses as the majority of mother's identified DIY jobs as being ignored at home. Mothers admitted that they wanted their partners to do more to fix things around the house as many dads turn into coach potatoes when they come in from a day at work. Spokesman for the company Kathryn Crawford said: "From a mum's perspective, they spend all day long working their fingers to the bone with the children and housework, and then dad rolls in from work, drops his stuff and puts his feet up." Dads who do take DIY courses may find that they have a lot more spare time on their hands as a Which? Report stated that British consumers spend more than 60 million working days waiting in for workmen. The survey found that people waiting at home for plumbers, electricians and gas engineers spend, on average, almost three working days each year waiting for them to arrive. People who do undertake DIY tasks have been warned to check for asbestos because a British Lung Foundation (BLF) study found that nearly half of homeowners do not realise that the mineral was used as a material in houses as recently as the 1990s. The BLF wants DIY devotees to be Asbestos Aware as nearly two thirds do not feel confident identifying asbestos-containing materials, which can be found in floor tiles, toilet cisterns, textured ceiling coatings and linings of boiler cupboards. Big Brother winner and television presenter Craig Phillips is backing the campaign as his uncle contracted asbestosis after being exposed to asbestos while working in the construction industry. Craig said: "I know exactly how dangerous asbestos can be. I want to encourage keen DIY-ers to be more vigilant in their homes when making improvements." Skills learned on carpentry courses, tiling courses and plastering courses can save homeowners a considerable amount of money when undertaking projects as they will not have to employ expensive tradesmen. DIY fanatics have said that performing home improvement tasks provides them with great satisfaction and gives them an opportunity to express their creativity.
