If You're Driving Into Mexico Better Get Coverage

There's truly no better way to enjoy and appreciate Mexico than a good old road trip. Contrary to popular opinion, Mexico has an excellent road and highway system, and there's certainly no shortage of fascinating and beautiful places to visit. Take Baja California for instance. This long thin peninsula south of San Diego ranges from rugged desert landscape to dramatic seashores and from world-class beach resorts to hideaway villages.

You can hike to see ancient rock paintings in the morning, and go whale watching in the afternoon. Perhaps you'd like to try some deep sea fishing as well. And with just one long highway running down the middle, and myriad smaller roads winding off who knows where, it's a road-warrior's dream come true. It's perfect for exploring in your own car, truck or RV.

But before you go, be sure you have Mexico auto insurance. Americans and Canadians may be forgiven for assuming their existing coverage extends to Mexico. After all, until just a few years ago, you didn't even need a passport to cross south of the border. But the fact is, the policy you have on your vehicle in the US or Canada is NOT valid or effective in Mexico.

That means you're on your own if your vehicle is damaged, stolen, or vandalized. More importantly, driving without valid coverage is illegal in Mexico, just like here at home. Mexican authorities can be even less forgiving than their US or Canadian counterparts on this score. Fines are hefty and jail time is not out of the question, especially if you're involved in an accident.

The law applies to cars, trucks, RVs, vans, SUVs, even motorcycles and boats. If it's got an engine, you're gonna need a separate policy. The good news is that effective and affordable Mexican insurance coverage is easy to obtain. You can get a variety of competitively-priced policies from several different carriers, making it easy to find and book a policy that's best for you and your travel plans.

Unfortunately, there are plenty of dishonest outfits out there peddling bogus products. The fact is that Mexican coverage is unknown territory for most buyers. On the other hand, there are many reputable insurance providers, with proven track records, quality products, and first-rate customer service. Make it a point to get your insurance at home and not as a last-minute thing near the border, just to be safe.

Mexico is a big, beautiful country, with amazing history, culture and natural landscape down every road and highway. The beaches aren't too shabby either. Whether you just want to zip across the border for a day or two, or are planning a no-holds-barred Mexican adventure, be sure protect yourself by getting the proper Mexican vehicle insurance. Soon you'll be on your way to an exciting adventure.
