Nanny Horror Stories (And Why You Should Trust a Nanny Agency)

Finding and selecting the perfect nanny is very far from a simple matter. After all, you are selecting an individual to watch over and care for your most precious of possessions… your children.

Tragically, the internet is littered with nanny horror stories, a majority of which occurred when parents decided to ignore the advice of nanny agencies and seek help independently. Some of these accounts are so shocking it's hard to believe that they're actually true.

One parent tells the tale of a nanny they had for nearly four months, who every day would take their infant for walks, usually over an hour. It wasn't until a chance-encounter with an old acquaintance that the parent discovered that these "walks" were in actuality the nanny taking their child to the tanning salon with her. While the nanny would sit in a tanning bed for nearly a half-hour, the small child would sit in his car seat on the floor of the tanning salon unsupervised. Naturally, this nanny was promptly fired.

Another horror story told, which is strikingly similar to a series of other instances, described a nanny reading a book for several hours while ignoring the two toddler children she was charged with watching. The lack of attention extended to such lengths that the older toddler began helping his little brother with things, like getting out of his stroller. Intervention finally arrived when the CEO of a NY nanny agency just so happened to be walking by and observed the older child almost drop his younger sibling, and rushed over to see if they were alone. The nanny didn't even notice when the CEO, a man dressed in street clothes, began talking and interacting with the boys.

Sadly, bad nanny situations aren't always based around the child being ignored. A Nanny-Nightmare story was reported by CNN in 2002 occurred when Danica Cordell-Reeh hired a nanny by the name of Michelle Padilla to watch her set of five-year-old twins.

After two weeks of employment, Cordell-Reeh dissatisfaction with her nanny led her to conclude it was time to let Padilla go. Perhaps sensing that, Padilla inexplicably left the house, and then the next day went to Cordell-Reeh's ex-husband, as well as the Administration for Child Services, with allegations against the mother of sexual abuse.

According to CNN, Child Services immediately removed the children from the home, revoked Cordell-Reeh's custody rights, and launched a formal child abuse investigation…. all because of the false, baseless accusations from a nanny angry about being canned.

A nanny agency guarantees the most suitable match between a caregiver and a client, but the truth is, there are no guarantees. That is why, nanny agency or not, it's important to take intense care when selecting who will watch over your children.
