4 Places To Start Your Home Organization: Closer Organizer Systems and More

Do you feel like your home is a mess? Tired of cleaning and picking up after everyone day in and day out? A clean home leads to a clean mind, so follow these tips for a new approach to home organization.

1. Kitchen: Throw away everything you don't use. Store items that you use frequently in easy to reach areas. Clear the counter and create areas of activity – like counter space for chopping. In this case, it makes sense to have knives nearby. If paper and letters buildup in your kitchen, either find another room for them, or designate a specific area where they can build.

2. Bathroom: Remove all of the items off of countertops. Put them into a box and sort them. From here, place items that you use frequently in the medicine cabinet. Throw away, or put into bathroom storage units items that you rarely use. Wipe all the countertops and clean the bathroom. Sort items according to their uses – hair, shaving, nail, makeup, etc. Store cleaning products underneath the sink, as well as leftover items that don't have a place anywhere else. When in doubt, throw it out. The less clutter you have, the more organized your bathroom will be.

3. Bedroom: A minimalist bedroom will keep you more energized and less distracted. Get rid of excess furniture that is never used by moving it or donating it. Clothing usually is in excess. Again, if you don't wear it, donate it. Decluttering your closet is much easier if you have closet organizer systems or custom closets, but closet hangers can greatly help your shoe, belt, and tie collections. Organize remaining clothing by color, usage, or style. If your bedroom is burdened with pillows, move the ones you don't use or those that are for show into another area. This will keep your bedroom more Zen-like. Hang your clothes or place them in a laundry sorter hamper when you come home instead of throwing them on the ground or draping them on a chair.

4. Office: Your office should be in a separate room from your bedroom. Your bedroom is a sanctuary of one kind and your office is a sanctuary of another – don't mix them. In your office, clean out drawers to free up space, and get rid of clutter on your desk. Use desktop trays to sort paperwork and mail. Keep cards and stamps in your drawers. Don't overstock filing cabinets; this will make it hard to find items when you need them.

With these tips in mind, and a few hours of dedicated cleaning, you will be well on your way to a cleaner and more organized home. Cleaning regularly on a weekly or bi-weekly schedule will help you to reduce mess, but you shouldn't have to every day (unless you have OCD). New protocol will help you break the habits that led to disorganization and clutter. As long as you stick to your new routines, your home won't feel so messy and neither will your head.
