An abbey has been built close to it in 655, but was later abandoned on 870 because of the plundering of the Danes. After the attack, an abbey was again built and the city was then enclosed by a surrounding wall as defence from the attacks of the Danes. Because of the surrounding walls, the name was changed to St. Peters burgh. Soon, a market was built, and the city continued to prosper and grew to become a small town. On the year 1070, however, Peterborough was attacked and burned because of the joined attempt of the Danes and Saxons to bring down William the Conqueror.
