By : Dirik Hameed    Every place has its own rich history that makes it what it is today. Just like what happened in the history of Peterborough, a city in the East of England. Isn't it a good idea to know what the city is before we came to know it in its present state? Learning about the origins of things will make people appreciate things even more. The city started as a settlement for the Saxons, based on the history of Peterborough uk. The Saxons built a village that they called Medehamstede, the original name of Peterborough, meaning meadow homestead. An abbey has been built close to it in 655, but was later abandoned on 870 because of the plundering of the Danes. After the attack, an abbey was again built and the city was then enclosed by a surrounding wall as defence from the attacks of the Danes. Because of the surrounding walls, the name was changed to St. Peters burgh. Soon, a market was built, and the city continued to prosper and grew to become a small town. On the year 1070, however, Peterborough was attacked and burned because of the joined attempt of the Danes and Saxons to bring down William the Conqueror. During the Dark Ages, Peterborough was under the rules of the abbots, making it a humble and trivial city at the time. Another burning of the city has been experienced, and again, the city dealt with the blow and recovered again. Weaving wool became the main industry, annual fairs were held, aOn 1539, the abbey on Peterborough was closed, due to Henry VII's orders of closing all abbeys in England. On 1541, the abbey changed into a cathedral. Because of its growing population which became 1500, Peterborough became a humble official city. The expansion of the population to 2000 people became evident in the 17th century. Just like other cities in the past, Peterborough was suffered the plague, killing many people in the area. The coming of the 18th century marked the development of the population and establishments in Peterborough. The Napoleonic wars brought forth greater demands of the town's products, thus, making the town flourish. Then, comes the establishment of the first theatre, together with the Custom House and the foundation of the Improvement Commissioners of the Parliament. The 19th century became a very important part in the history of Peterborough because of more developments of the city. The population prospered, introducing more establishments in the area. The infirmary, gas street lighting, corn exchange, St. Peters Training College, iron foundry, elastic webbing industry, brick production, railways, piped water supply and public library were brought in during this time. From the 20th century up until the present time, Peterborough became a symbol of improvement and growth. Electricity was introduced, and thanks to the technological advancements that came, the city became what we know as today. From a simple and menial colony to a flourishing city in England, Peterborough has its fair share of history. The history of Peterborough is really a rich one that is really worth recognizing by many people.
