Regardless of your religion or spiritual background, you have heard the stories about the man named Jesus. Those who are Christians believe he came to save the world. Others believe that he was just a prophet or important figure in the history of the world. When people take a trip to the Holy Land, one of the first things they like to see are the places where Jesus lived, performed his miracles and died. To Christians, this is particularly important because of the significance that Jesus has had on their lives. Taking a trip to Israel means visiting places from the Bible that involve the life of Jesus of Nazareth. For example, one place that you will want to visit is the birthplace of Jesus, Bethlehem. Jesus was born to a young woman named Mary. She was in Bethlehem with Joseph, to whom she was engaged. They were there due to a decree that a census be taken by the emperor Caesar Augustus of the Romans. They were unable to find a room in the inn, however, due to the large number of people in Bethlehem. Therefore, Jesus was born in a stable and it was here that shepherds in the fields saw angels who were proclaiming his birth. Another important city in the life of Jesus is Nazareth. This is the city where Jesus grew up. After John the Baptist was put into prison by Herod, Jesus moved from Nazareth to Capernaum. Capernaum is known as the home of Jesus and His disciples. While walking by the Sea of Galilee near Capernaum, Jesus called Peter and His brother Andrew to follow Him. Jesus also called James and John the sons of Zebedee and all four of these men were fishermen on the Sea of Galilee. This is also where Matthew was called to follow Jesus. Capernaum was the site of many of Jesus' miracles. Near Capernaum is the Mount of Beatitudes. This is thought to be the site of the Sermon on the Mount although the exact location is unknown. On this hillside, Jesus taught His disciples about being faithful followers of God. Nearby is the Sea of Galilee. This is where Jesus walked on the water when his disciples thought they were going to drown. A great deal of Jesus' ministry was centered near the Sea of Galilee. Jesus and His disciples often visited the Garden of Gethsemane. Located just outside of Jerusalem, on the Mount of Olives, it is a small olive grove. Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus at this spot. The Via Dolorosa was the path taken by Jesus through Jerusalem on his way to his death at Calvary. The Place of the Skull, or Golgatha, is where Jesus was crucified. The Garden Tomb is where Jesus' body was laid to rest after his crucifixion. Taking a trip to the Holy Land and following the steps of Jesus will give you the adventure of a lifetime. You will leave a changed person, as you experience the culture of the Holy Land. It's no wonder that those who take trips to the Holy Land know that they must return as soon as possible!
