A Self Defense DVD Could be the Key to Your Safety

It’s unfortunate to say, but we live in violent times. Muggings are becoming increasingly common and everyday people are often becoming the victims of violent crime. But if you are one of the many who don’t want to take this sitting down, a self defense DVD could be the answer you’ve been looking for.

We all have different excuses for not wanting to learn self defense. Whether it is time, money or simply because we are out of shape. But there is no excuse for allowing yourself or those you love to be controlled and victimized by the lowest of the low in our society. It’s time to take action and to bring a state of calm back to our streets. And the only way we can do that is by learning to defend ourselves.

A few years ago, the only way to learn how to defend yourself was to sign up for a martial arts class. These types of classes can be costly, as well as time-consuming. And it was all too common for people to drop out of the classes before getting all the skills that they required. But now that you can learn from home, the entire process is so much more simple.

One of the most important components of self defense actually doesn’t involve anything physical at all. By simply being aware of your surroundings and having your eyes and ears always on guard for potentially dangerous situations, you can often avoid a violent altercation. This particular technique is typically called avoidance but it can go by many different names. It basically entails training your mind to become more aware of what is happening around you, and being on guard.

When you first start to learn self defense, the instructor will likely begin with this basic concept. One item that is usually a good starting point is ridding yourself of distractions when you are outside walking, jogging or biking. A common distraction that could leave you vulnerable to an attack is listening to music while outside. While of course it is a great way to make the time go by, it can leave you incredibly vulnerable to an attack. Predators will often stake out someone who they can tell isn’t aware of their surroundings. So if you have music blaring in both ears, you won’t be able to hear them coming up behind you and they will have the advantage of surprise.

So in order to combat this, either don’t listen to music at all, or at least leave one ear open. Your ears are one of the most valuable tools in self defense and if they are obstructed, then you are leaving yourself wide open.

When you learn from a self defense DVD, other avoidance options will likely be taught as well. These can include not texting while walking, and keeping cell phone conversations to a bare minimum. Remember, that you are in charge of your own safety, so you need to be aware at all times.
