When England won the World Cup in 1966 playing on home soil, few would predict that this was going to be a curse rather than a joy for the team. That July day in Wembley Stadium was an unforgettable day for the captain Bobby Moore and his players, but the players that tried to emulate their achievement since then have suffered traumatic experiences, since the Cup has always been a bridge too far. England in the World Cup 2010 is expected to get at least to the finals. However, this is the constant expectation from a team that has managed to reach the semifinal only once, in 1990. England has failed three times to qualify for the finals, and they went out at the quarters in 2002 and 2006. England fans are getting used to having their hopes up every four years, only to see them dashed soon afterwards, once the teams get closer to the highest stage. in World Cup 2010 expectations are unusually high, because the team seems to have serious players, and most importantly the needed dedication to get high. Much of that optimism is down to the presence of an Italian as manager coach. Fabio Capello is a very successful coach with many clubs in Italy and abroad and has vast experience in World Cups and important matches. After a truly stellar career in Italy and at international level, Capello has enjoyed success as the manager of Milan, Roma and Real Madrid, coaching important players and huge stars. Capello himself said about England in World Cup 2010 that he doesn't want to inflate high expectations, but he does know that the team is expected to go well. According to the players of the team Capello has this useful knack of being able to get the best out of all players in the squad, listening to their opinions and views and then imparting his own theory and of course his wisdom. England in World Cup 2010 is indeed expected to do well since it starts in a relatively easy group - or at least it seems that way. However, in order to find success in South Africa the team needs its best players to be in excellent form. England is blessed with some of the most known and best players in the world, such as Wayne Rooney, Frank Lambard and John Terry who play important role in their clubs as well. David Beckham is the major missing player of England in World Cup 2010, since he suffered a severe ankle injury that made him watch all matches from his house. Beckham is an important member of the squad so Capello might bring him with the team to South Africa in order to motivate his players. England in World Cup 2010 has a lot to prove, once more. Is the team going to overcome the weight of expectations that has been weighing heavily on the back of the players for so many years? We will see about that once the first few rounds are over.
