Modest bathing suits may be said to reflect two converging trends that have been developing for decades and which have now finally met. First is the usual product cycle, the familiar fashion cycle, whereby the old is rendered new again, reinterpreted for a younger audience whose unfamiliarity with the product makes it seem entirely new. Marketers and the manufacturers they advise are also trying to tap into the perceived public mood, which is one of nostalgia for more certain times where values were solid and designs simple.
But the bigger reason, ironically also having to do with the public mood, is on account of the rise in religious fundamentalism witnessed over the past thirty years around the world. Perhaps this development is not so surprising if thought of as a resumption of previous sensibilities, the apparent march towards secularism being nothing more than an interruption. But slow and steady growth has been observed in women's apparel by businesses eager to cash in, and one notable trend has been the tendency of even young women to deliberately choose the most demure designs possible. In fact, with the power of the internet, such designers are flourishing as never before, finding an eager audience for what are often homemade or specially commission product.
Modest bathing suits will probably never return to the looks of the Victorian Age, and they are likely to remain niche products still - but their consumer base is growing and expelled to swell much more before reaching its saturation point. In the United States, the market is driven almost entirely by Christian women, often peddling homemade designs. The main obstacle has been in achieving practicality without compromising on modesty. It's an especially difficult challenge when we remember that these outfits are intended for women, who will also want something that looks good, too, in addition to being modest! The most successful ones are those that offer beauty, modesty, and full freedom of movement all at once.
