When working in an office environment, there are always those who wear a sweater because they are constantly cold and those that are looking for comfort because they are too warm. It is impossible to please everyone with one thermostat setting. If you are seeking cooling comfort in a warm office, a few modifications to your routine and workspace can help you create a more productive office atmosphere. Use Desk Fans Confined desk spaces, such as cubicles, often become warm and stuffy because air cannot circulate properly through the area. You can create cooling air circulation with desk fans. You can find small desk fans at almost any discount store or office supply store. You can typically find fans that are stationary and fans that oscillate. Some styles are attached to large clips, which allow you to position fans at the top or side of cubicle walls. Strategically placing a desk fan or two in your workspace will help cool your area in no time. Before purchasing your own desk fans, ask your office supply manager if your employer will pay for fans. Modify Your Wardrobe Many office workers wear jackets, slacks, and other business-appropriate clothing to appear more professional, even when the weather is warm. If you are constantly warm in the office, consider wearing layers that can be modified when you are sitting at your desk. Wear a cooler, lighter shirt or blouse under your jacket, and then remove the jacket when you are sitting at your desk. Wear breathable fabrics, such as cotton, and avoid synthetic materials that can trap heat against your body. Consider Maintenance Issues Is your area of the office considerably warmer than the rest of the office? If your problem seems isolated to your area, there may be maintenance issues to blame. Ask your office manager to examine the office HVAC system. There may be a faulty vent near your work area, or other maintenance issues causing your problem. Start a Petition Is everyone in your office uncomfortable? If your office temperature is at an uncomfortable level for the majority of the workers in your office, you might be able to make a change. If you confront the office manager alone, he/she might not see the problem as an office-wide issue. Create a written petition that explains the problem professionally. Include ways a cooler office could benefit the company, such as happier employees and higher productivity. After all, the manager may need to justify higher utility costs to cool the office. Ask each employee to sign the petition if they support the cause, and then present the document to management in a professional manner.
