Preventing Counterfeiting from Cards Printed by a Card Printer

Security is important these days with the increasing number of ways people find to utilize processes for inappropriate benefits. One of the items item that is used in inappropriate ways is the ID card. Counterfeiting, duplication and alteration of ID cards can provide the means for access to organizations by people who have not been authorized. There are many ways to prevent counterfeiting of your identification cards printed by your photo ID card printer system.

ID cards can be printed on cardstock that has preprinted security features. Micro printing is technique where text can be added to the card with user specifications. Random font and misspellings are often included in the text to make it custom to the card issuer. This micro printing text is only 5 thousandths of an inch high making it obvious to those working in the security areas of the company, but not readily identifiable to those who carry the card or those who may try to duplicate it. Often this text is printed in ultraviolet green or blue. This makes it extremely difficult to see and copy.

Other features that may be added to the card include holograms. Single or multiple security images may be placed on the card to increase the difficulty of alteration. Lamination of the holograms can be placed on the front of the card. Some ID card printers allow a lamination of the back of the card as well. Other forms of laminate options include laminates that contain OVI (optically variable ink) ink. OVI ink is an advanced anti-counterfeiting measure that displays two distinct colors. The color seen depends on the angle that a person is looking at the printed card surface. Other laminates have UV-visible ink that can contain multiple colors. Holographic metallization with embossed micro-text is possible with advanced laminate options. Normally, these types of features are pricing and are most often utilized in driver's licenses, government identification, and advanced access identification for large institutions, such as transportation.

Like your driver's license, multiple images of the identical picture may be placed on the card to increase authenticity of the card. Other graphics may also be placed on the card such as a specific color that authorizes card holders into a specific secured location.

Other security features that may be implemented include pre-printed serial numbers on the selected cardstock. These numbers may be used for security purposes. Often the serial numbers are important in the card printing system. Without the serial number preencoded on the card, the card printer can be programmed to eject a card without printing the custom information from the ID card software. If the card is encoded correctly, the printer proceeds without delay.

These above items are sample security features that many advanced ID card printing organizations apply to their cards in single or multiple combinations. Other features may also be applied to the organizations badges to maintain security necessary for the organization to succeed in its mission. Some security features may be specified with the ID card software.

Special security features are determined and maintained within the confines of the security officials and appropriate management. Changes to these options may be made at any time to secure the organization in case of security breaches.
