SEO is the process of improving the volume or quality of traffic to a website or a web page from search engines via natural or unpaid search results as opposed to paid methods, such as Pay Per Click (CPC) or CPA.

The most important aspect to any business is the marketing. If people don't know about the services or products that you offer, how will they come to you? As a business owner, it is certainly in your organisation's best interest to make use of modern methods and technology and in this day and age, marketing has taken on an entirely new dimension courtesy of the internet. The difference between success and failure in any web business is making sure that the consumers that are looking for your product or service can find you.

SEO involves maximizing your organisation's website for the best results, editing the website content and utilizing specific coding by recognizing certain keywords that visitors would be more inclined to search for. Simple practices for example, the number of times a specific keyword appears in the content, can affect the website's optimization, as do Meta and Title tags. The content of your website is the most important; it will determine what traffic is generated and how many links you will get. Better yet, you can control and implement it yourself. Creating quality content and publishing it on your website is the best way to generate links. This type of content is commonly referred to as linkbait. Other advantages of search engine optimization include the following:

* You can attract specific visitors to your website by offering information related to their individual needs.

* Increase brand recognition and identity.

* You can get measurable results by analysis of search engine reports, website statistics and visitor's conversion rates

It is quite apparent that the more visible your website is the better chance you have of attracting more visitors to your site. Clearly, this would be beneficial in terms of exposure and more importantly, financially lucrative. In other words, SEO is about attracting long term exposure to your business at a fraction of the cost of traditional marketing.

As with anything, there are pros and cons; the most notable being the competition (how many other websites are aiming for top positions for the given keyword). Online businesses must consistently maintain their position in the link rankings in order to attract the most customers. Content and keywords must be edited and improved in order to maintain the website's position. Obviously the goal is to get the highest position on the search engine as possible. Sites that fall under the search engine grid will not see much benefit of SEO.
