A garage door has two distinct functions. It provides a secure access to your garage, and it complements the overall exterior decoration of the house in the same manner as carefully chosen trim. Perhaps there's no better way to make your home more attractive than to replace your old, outdated garage door. Don't forget that making the exterior of your home attractive improves the curb appeal, and curb appeal sells homes. So if you are in the market to sell your home, a new garage door could be well worth the investment and just the touch you need to get your home sold. Homeowners often see standard white, single-layer, non-insulated steel frame garage doors and wonder how they can possibly add curb appeal. Well, the fact of the matter is that there are so many different color, materials, and design types to choose from, that the selection almost seems endless. In addition to pre-designed garage doors there are even some manufacturers that will make custom doors to your design specifications. Doors can consist of different materials. The most popular materials are steel, composite wood and resin, wood, and even ornamental iron. Each material has different functionability and of course a different appearance. These doors can be constructed with or without window panels as well. Design possibilities are vast. Traditional style doors have the appearance of being made of several smaller rectangular panels. These doors offer a large variety of window designs to accentuate the door. One of the unique designs available today is the carriage door. Another unique design includes ornamental iron doors. These complement additional iron or wrought iron exterior trim such as fences, gates, or lamp posts. Wood doors or composite doors designed to look like wood, can offer a natural accent to your home's exterior. Although wood can be painted any color, natural wood doors can have stain and polyurethane applied for a finish that is beautiful, yet distinctive and unique. Many pre-built insulated garage doors qualify under section 25C of the International Energy Conservation Code for a tax credit of up to $1500. Insulated doors help keep the cold air in and the hot air out, or the hot air in and the cold air out, and provide a level of noise reduction as well. There are additional requirements to qualify for this credit so check out the details with your local garage door company. Although a good architecturally designed home should naturally draw your attention to the front door area of the home, a garage door that is rusting, fading, or worn in some other way can negatively affect a potential buyer's gaze. Remember that for an economical, functional, and stylistic improvement to your home's curb appeal, a new garage door is just what you need.
