Using a Martial Arts DVD - 3 Traits You Must Have

Using a martial arts DVD to learn basic self defense or to advance your current skill set has become much more common over the past 5 years. Distance learning has become a popular option that meets the needs of a variety of circumstances. However, there are some personal traits or characteristics that a person must posses in order to make learning martial arts independently a success.

1. Self Motivation

If you are a very self-motivated individual then distance learning is an option that could prove to be successful. The reason that self motivation is essential is because if you are learning martial arts on your own, then there will no one looking over your shoulder or telling you to do it. It is very common for people to take self education very seriously for a week or two and then fall out of the routine or simply quit caring. If you work better in team oriented environments or enjoy having someone else making sure that you do the proper work, then distance learning may not be for you.

2. Attention to Detail

Martial arts is inherently a set of very precise movements that you must learn. Unfortunately, if are not prone to paying attention to the details, you could quickly find yourself creating a lot bad habits, that may prove hard to break. In order to create a solid set of skills, it is vital that you pay attention to the smallest details that are provided for you. One of the most pertinent problems that may arise is injury. If moves are done incorrectly, there is always a chance that you will injure yourself. Many people choose to get outside assistance in conjunction with a martial arts DVD. This is especially helpful for people who are just starting out. However, if you already have a solid foundation of martial arts skills, then distance learning should be easy.

3. Desire to Not Cut Corners

There are many forms of martial arts that will require additional materials or tools. This may include specific types of weapons or training products to help you improve. While there are some ways that you minimize these expenses, cutting corners will often lead to more problems than not. One of the reasons that going to gyms or training facilities can be expensive is because of the money that is spent on obtaining and maintaining the highest quality equipment. Another area in which many people try to cut corners is by skipping some of the more fundamental techniques in order to learn moves that are "more fun". Unfortunately, if you skip the techniques that are meant to help you create a foundation for your skills, there is a high likelihood that you will have problems learning or executing more advanced techniques correctly.

Using a martial arts DVD to learn a new form of martial arts, or to supplement what you are already learning has proven to be the perfect solution for many people. As long as you have the personal traits necessary to be successful, there is no reason that distance learning will not work for you.
