10 Tips to Be a Great Party Host

Hosting a great party is challenging, but a skill that can be mastered nonetheless. As the host, it is your duty to ensure that your guests feel comfortable and have a great time

Being a great party host is, however, not without its pitfalls. It can be nerve-racking, stressful and more often than not, you, as host, will very often not get too much time to enjoy yourself. Take heart, it does not have to be this way. To ensure maximum success, follow these 10 tips to become the greatest host/hostess in your neighborhood!

1. The first thing to do is decide on a budget for the event. This will assist you further down the line in way of entertainment, food, decorations, etc.

2. Decide on a theme. This does not have to be anything elaborate but will go a long way in helping you to plan around it. Examples: Graduation party, engagement party, christening, bar-mitzvah.

3. Decide how many guests you can accommodate, and then draw up a guest list. It's always a good idea to invite the "party starters" - the kind of people you know will bring fun to the party. This is not the time for old family feuds to be settled or internal politics to come to the fore. Your guest list will make or break your party so it is imperative that you choose your guests with care.

4. Design invitations and ensure that you send them out at least 2 weeks before the big event. This will give all your invitees enough time to plan their schedule around the big event aswell as enough time to RSVP.

5. Plan your menu according to the event. Do you plan to cater for the event yourself, or will you be hiring the pros? Remember that some of your guests may have specific dietary requirements.

6. Now comes the fun part. What do you have in mind entertainment-wise? There is such a large array of entertainers out there these days that it should not be difficult to find one that meets both your occasion and your pocket. Allow enough time for the entertainer to set up, if necessary, before the guests arrive. No party is complete without music. Set up your sound system, give your CD's a good clean and make sure that all the speakers are working.

7. Using a critical eye, take a walk through the venue, the evening before your party. Spruce up where necessary; pack away all valuable and breakable items. Flowers give an instant facelift to an area, so the rule of thumb here would be there can never be too many!

8. The big day has finally arrived! Take a long bath, try to relax and get yourself dressed and ready at least an hour before.

9. Greet each of your guests personally. A welcome drink is always a pleasant touch and helps everyone to relax and gives them something to do. If there is a formal seating arrangement, escort them to their respective places.

10. Stick to the program. Above all else, relax, smile and have fun!
