Google has made public the launch of Google TV at its Google I/O Developer Meeting.

Google TV will be offered as a Net and wifi enabled box that may connect to a TV using an HDMI connection. It'll have a keyboard and a pointing gizmo though specifics weren't made public. Looking on Google TV permits users to find content both on the Web and on telly. From there they can view web content, view Television or maybe set a Digital recorder to record Television shows at a future point. Google TV will also integrate with smart phones and the Android market.

Google also declared collaborations with the the NBA and Netflix, which may permit integrated optimized Web content for the TV by connecting online schedules with Digital recorder programming in the case of NBA.com. Google says the preview yesterday was just the start and plans on opening up Google TV to developers in the future. Google is also working with Sony and Logitech to bring Google TV to TVs, Blu-ray players and companion boxes, which are prepared to be released in Best Buy stores next fall. Google TV presents an amazing opportunity for enterprises, gigantic and tiny. When folk are looking Google TV, they will be pointed at the most applicable content available, which should give enterprises the chance to get in front of thousands of people without the heavy cost of TV advertising.

It is going to be engaging to discover how it plays out this summer and what becomes available for the launch this autumn.

The New York Times reports that Google's biggest motivation for developing Google TV is to "ensure that its...search and advertising systems, play a central role." The naysayers will no doubt say that Google TV be yet another attempt for the conglomerate to gather more data which will lead to more intrusive ads than ever before. The argument can be valid given the privacy concerns that many have with the advertising model. However, looked at from a different perspective, it also puts the most relevant information in front of the end user making it easier to find what you are looking for.

Those are the questions that are top of my mind, what do you think of putting Google in your living room? Will this be a winner for Google or just another failed experiment that tries to bring the Web to your TV?
