Many businesses buy and use marketing gifts as a way to ensnare new customers, and they include this money in their advertising budget. Using marketing gifts can be efficient when properly done, to bring in new clients, expand your customer base and target new demographics.
When shopping for marketing gifts, keep in mind the target audience and what you wish to convey to them. If you only want to get your name on their lips, using simple items like pens or embossed postcards would be sufficient. But if you want to gain new business and create brand recognition, it will take more than a few thousand ink pens and cards mailed out. The right strategy for using marketing gifts has to be in place to do any good, or you have wasted the money spent on their purchase.
The first step to using marketing gifts correctly to increase business is to decide the customer base you are choosing to invite in. If you are simply expanding the ground you cover with advertising, it can be an easier task than taking on another set of demographics. IF you are taking on a new demographic, there are studies that are concerned with your new numbers. The age, sex, location, employment, marital status and even race of the new demographic can be factors to consider when choosing your gifts. If the age of the target audience you choose is between 19 and 31, you would try to find items that these people would find interesting such as carabineers, key chains, bobble heads or even something as small as a pocket knife. Ages 32 through 41 would have different interests and therefore would not be excited to receive the same gifts.
The information from demographic studies will help you decide when and where to send the gifts you choose, or how to inform the customers about the gift. Some companies choose to use enticing postcards or letters to inform potential customers about their free merchandise that will be given away only at certain locations. This brings customers into the establishment and gives sales personnel the chance to meet with and sell to potential interested customers at the time the free gift is given. Other companies send out postcards with a return so that potential customers can choose the type of gift they want from a list, and they simply have to agree to be placed on a mailing list for future reference. This can be agreeable to companies that use telemarketing or mailers as part of their market research and advertising.
