As the warranty expires on your vehicle, you may want to consider using an independent automotive shop. Independent shops can provide equal, if not better quality of work as compared to factory shops. Even the most reliable of vehicles will eventually need maintenance from normal wear and tear. Depending on which area of the country you reside, harsh weather conditions may accelerate the need for car repairs. For example, those who live in the Northeast will see more potential issues with the car's under body from rust and corrosion. Service performed by independent shops will not void vehicle warranty. There is a myth that original dealers are the best place to have vehicles serviced. Independents will typically charge a lower rate from the original factory dealer. Independent shops have a different cost structure as compared to the original dealer. The flat rates are lower, however this does not mean that the quality of work will suffer. Part of the advantage of the independent shop is that they do not have to generate profit and cover costs in order to subsidize business departments as typically seen in new car dealerships. Independent dealers also do not have to account for expenses such as maintaining the showroom floor for new vehicle sales. Original dealers may lack the expertise in dealing with older vehicles. These original dealers typically spend most of their efforts on performing warranty work. Because of the nature of the new dealers, they are not incentivized to save money for the customer. In cases where cars are still under the manufacturer warranty, parts are replaced on a larger number of claims. With independent shops, they are more likely to fix the problem without resorting to ordering as many new parts. Older dealers usually have staff with lower turnover as well. The benefit of the independent shop is having mechanics who can fix cars which the dealers have essentially forgotten about. Because of specializing and servicing a specific range of vehicles, independent shops will also typically be in a position to troubleshoot problems. Independent repair shops are often better at sourcing parts. They not only have access to the same new parts as the new car dealer, but are networked with suppliers who can provide used and refurbished guaranteed parts as well. The result is that repairs can be done at a lower cost, without compromising the quality. Independent repair shops have a greater incentive to repair your vehicle. Often times at new car dealerships, the repair departments are focused more on generating revenue from new car sales. What this means to you is that they are less likely to fix an issue, and more likely to steer you in the direction of obtaining a new vehicle. Independent automotive shops are focused on repairing your vehicle without having the conflict of interest in trying to sell you a new vehicle.
