Any gift is better when it has a personal touch and there’s no doubt that the ultimate personal touch is to make the gift yourself. That may seem a little daunting to the inexperienced person, but with a great concept and the right materials anyone can create a memorable gift. If you’re looking for a little inspiration, you should try making a photo calendar using photo quality inkjet paper. These make great gifts that can be admired year round. Here’s how to create a gift that is sure to bring a smile to the recipient’s face.

1) Choose 12 photos that you think are worthy of your calendar. Try to choose photos that are special to the person you’re giving the calendar to. These can be snapshots of the two of you together, family photos, vacation pictures, or even photos of some of their favorite things. You can even choose a theme for the calendar and try to find photos that are in line with the chosen theme like “Jamie’s Favorite Things” and choose random photos 12 things that the person loves. If the calendar is going to be a birthday gift, for example, the theme can be “12 years of Birthdays” and you can include 12 different photos throughout the years of the person on their special day.

2) Next you’re going to want to edit out any red eye and crop the photos as you’d like them to appear in the calendar.

3) Now you should go online and find a good calendar template to print out. For the calendar pages you should use premium matte photo paper. Matte paper will make it easier to write on and add things to. All in all, the paper should be relatively heavy and durable. Remember it has to last all year, so you want to choose premium matte photo paper. After printing out each month’s page, you’re now ready to print photos.

4) Open the photos in a photo editing program like Photoshop and play around with them a bit before you print. Try adding fun borders or frames around the pictures. Try experimenting with color or maybe put one photo in black and white. Once you are content with the level of creativity of the photos you should load your inkjet glossy photo paper into the printer and begin the printing process. Inkjet glossy photo paper is the best choice because it has a high color contrast and really adds a professional touch to any photo.

5) After your photos have been printed you should design a cover for the calendar. Come up with a clever title or put their name on it and the date. There are plenty of templates available online if you’re unable to think of something clever, but all in all, the cover page should set the tone for the rest of the calendar. You can use either premium matte photo paper or inkjet glossy photo paper for this page. It’s up to you.

6) As far as binding goes, you can have it professionally bound or do it yourself with a stapler. Just make sure all the pages are in line and staple them at very top.
