Article marketing is a great way for online businesses to market not only their business, but themselves through the content they write. A key to article marketing though is placing the article somewhere where people will be able to see it, which is where article directories come in.

This article will list the steps required on how to start an online article directory.

1. The first step is to find article directory scripts and software that you can install on your server; you will need a server if you do not have one. There are three different ways to complete this step depending on your business goals. First, take the services of a software firm who can create a customized article directory for you. This option is expensive though and not for everyone.

The second option is to purchase a ready-to-use article directory package. There are many vendors who are selling PHP/MySQL based scripts and software that you need. This is cheaper than the first option and come with the backing of development teams and constant updates. The final option is the cheapest; simply install a free script off the internet. Some of these scripts are good and will cause you no problems, but many are insecure and will cause you trouble.

2. Once you have your software you need to download it on your computer. Once you are done installing it go through and read the README.txt. This file will tell you how to upload files to your server, the different permissions for files, etc.

3. You can now upload the directory structure with files to your server. Choose the place you will want to create a new article directory. After finishing the upload you need to change permission of all files and directory. Directions on how to do this should be in the README.txt. Changing the permission to 777 or 755 is most common.

4. It is now time to create a database to hold all of the date your article directory site will obtain. Use phpMyAdmin to create a MySQL database. By doing this you will only need to provide a database name and a username and password.

5. Finish by typing the URL of the installation directory into your browser and press enter. Once you have done this you should provide relevant information such as the details of your database. It will finish installing and you will be done!

There is a lot of need for article directories as article marketing continues to dominate the online marketing world. Follow the tips from this article and you can have your own Internet article directory!
