Ideas for Blank Clothing

Everybody likes t-shirts. Whether new or old, blank shirts or heavily designed, the t-shirt is always there to throw on whenever we want to just feel comfortable. They are the easy gift, the ever-present at tourist traps, concerts, sporting events, political campaigns, family reunions… you name it, there’s a t-shirt for it.

Unfortunately, the constant acquisition of t-shirts often leads to an overstuffed closet. But don’t dump those t-shirts in the trash quite yet. Here’s a list of things you can do with your old t-shirts rather than bury them in the city dump. After all, they’re your shirts! They deserve better than that!

Turn your clothing blanks inside out and stitch the arms and bottom closed (minus a small opening at one end). Pull the shirt right-side in, fill it with feathers or stuffing or foam, stitch the opening closed, and you’ve got a pillow.

Or go green, by cutting off the sleeves and neck bands, then turn it inside out and sew the bottom. After turning it right-side in, you’ll have an easy-to-carry reusable shopping bag. The sleeves have now become handles!

You can increase your wardrobe even more by transforming an old t-shirt into a cozy nightshirt. Just cut off the bottom of a t-shirt, right below the underarm, and then sew it back onto a second one.

Or, if you’ve got a whole bundle of t-shirts you’d like to reuse, design and create your own quilt. The first step is to design your layout, planning ahead to decide which shirt you want where, and what size. Remember, measure ten times, only cut once!

After washing and drying the materials, cut up the sides of the shirts, discarding sleeves, giving yourself a block of fabric.

Next, cut out your blocks from the blank clothing. A template used for the cutting is a helpful tool for this step, since all of your blocks are going to be the same size.

After cutting, lay out your final arrangement as was planned in your original design, then start sewing them together. To make your job (and life) simpler, sew the blocks together into individual rows, than focus on sewing the rows together.

Don’t actually have any old t-shirts to use? No problem. There are tons of resources to acquire large quantities of t-shirts. Order wholesale blank t shirts online, allowing yourself the option of picking and choosing what sizes, colors, and patterns you’d like to use. While this may not allow for the same unique individualism in your finished product that you may achieve by using your old, used t-shirts, the use of blank shirts will allow you more of an opportunity to get your project exactly the way you like it.
