Types of Services Offered on Professional Air Ambulance Transports

Air ambulances are for patients who require transportation and because of their medical conditions, cannot take commercial airline flights. While this may be emergency transport, at times it is simply an expedient way to move a patient who requires the presence of medical personnel during a long distance transport. (Short trips are generally handled by regular ground ambulance services.) Medical personnel are always on board during flight to monitor the patient and see to their needs, as is emergency equipment. These planes fly into regular airports, are not military transport, do not fly into danger zones and rarely fly when conditions are unsafe (such as during storms).

In 1909 the United States Coast Artillery Corps and the Army Medical Corps worked together and designed an air ambulance that could carry a patient on a stretcher. The original plan was that the physician would treat the patient and then pilot the plane, but it took years before this system was fully accepted. Growing acceptance of air medical flights has accelerated and now air ambulance service is a reliable, respected and in many cases the most preferred way of long distance transporting patients in emergency situations. It is also an accepted pre-arranged way to transport loved ones. Lear Jets and small aircraft are often used in these situations because of their comfort, reliability, range, and capacity to fly long distances plus they can offer the space required for medical personnel and complete bedside to bedside services.

Standards for emergency medical transport are now set by the United States government and the Commission on air Medical Transportation systems (CAMTS). These standards require that air ambulance service companies own their small aircraft and can guarantee that the pilots meet the requirements for flying an air ambulance which are much higher than for pilots flying non-emergency flights, and that other members of the crew, as well as the plane, meet the highest standards possible. Some companies specializing emergency in medical transport have 800 numbers which are answered 24 hours every day of the year with a flight crew ready to immediately respond. Depending on the patient's condition, medical teams can consist of any one or more of the following: a Board Certified Flight Physician, an ICU/CCU Licensed Registered Nurse, a Nationally Registered Flight Paramedic (EMT-P), someone certified in ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support), and someone certified in respiratory therapy.

Emergency equipment on board an air ambulance will usually include an ambu-bag, an emergency drug kit, suction, a complete supply of respiratory equipment, oxygen facial masks, a tracheotomy mask, cannulas, a nasal respirator, an ambulance bag, a heart monitor/defibrillator, IV solutions and infusion set, an infusion pump, and any other special equipment the patient might need.

During the air ambulance flight the Central Communications Center tracks the flight and sends instant email or phone communication regarding the progress of the flight and the exact time of arrival to the family. When the plane lands and the patient is en route to the hospital, information will again be sent to the family.
