Common Mistakes in Puppy Housebreaking

The process of puppy housebreaking is a necessary but sometimes frustrating endeavor. Using puppy training pads to aid in housebreaking can ease the experience. Working out a routine schedule that both teaches the puppy how and where to use the potty while at the same time not overtaking the pet owner's life is an important part of having a successful house training experience. When housebreaking a puppy, in addition to all the techniques that work, it is important to realize that there are some common mistakes that can make the process frustrating, and often extend the amount of time it takes a puppy to be fully trained.

Some forms of punishment used in puppy housebreaking can create additional problems, especially during the early stages of the training. As young puppies do not initially understand the purpose of puppy training pads, punishment for pottying in the wrong place can accidentally condition the dog to believe that he or she is getting in trouble for being seen in the act, rather than for committing the act in the wrong place. Puppies may then try to hide their eliminations in places that their owners cannot see. This can increase the time it takes for successful puppy housebreaking. When using puppy training pads as a part of house training, teaching the dog early that the pad is the proper place to go will help him or her realize that the pet owner's frustration is not about seeing the act, but that it is about where the act is occurring. Puppy training pads are useful in this regard as these thin, absorbent mats are scented in a way that encourages the young pet to seek it out when potty time comes.

Finally, it is important in house training to be aware that a puppy's short attention span means he or she will not be aware that the punishment delivered relates to anything other than what is happening at that exact moment. If a dog is not caught in the act of eliminating somewhere other than on the puppy training pads, it is best to not punish the animal, and to form a new strategy about how to keep an eye out for when the mess is happening. Puppy housebreaking can be a challenging experience, but the results will be rewarding and will help to form a lasting bond between pet and owner.
