Now that summer is almost upon us a lot of people are thinking about where to spend their summer vacations. If you would like to go to an area that's replete with picturesque covered bridges, historic sites, quiet towns, and lots of exciting outdoor activities then you will want to take your next vacation in the beautiful Allegheny region of the eastern United States.

Whether you are looking for outdoor activities such as boating, cycling, fishing, nature viewing, or hiking, if you lean more towards exploring history and heritage, or if you enjoy looking at and participating in artistic endeavors, the Alleghenies should be at the top of your list for your where you'll want to spend your summer vacation.

The Alleghenies is a region in south central Pennsylvania that offers unique experiences for its visitors. Whether you'd like the thrill of gliding down a zip line, taking a relaxing stroll through historical towns, or attending unique festivals, a trip to the Alleghenies will satisfy your desires because it has it all.

Let's take a look at some of the most popular things to do in the Alleghenies.

For excitement and safety nothing beats the new zip line park in Raystown. This park, close to Raystown Lake, has five zip lines. The longest is four hundred fifty fun-filled feet.

If you love history you won't want to miss the fiftieth anniversary celebration of the East Broad Top Railroad that will be held on June 27th at the Altoona Railroaders Memorial Museum.

In the Bedford County region you can enjoy a seventy five minute "guided" walking tour of downtown Bedford. You can download the trek onto your MP3 player and listen to it while you walk.

What would summer be like without strawberries? You can enjoy the Fulton County Chamber of Commerce & Tourism's 20th Annual Strawberry Festival in the Mc Connellsburg region of the Alleghenies on June 11th and 12th. Go to the festival and you will enjoy epicurean strawberry delights and children's activities. And there is even a traditional, old-fashioned hot dog eating contest.

Do you like to vacation later in the year? If you love to fish you will find that the Alleghenies haves some of the best fishing streams in the eastern part of the United States.

Do you love to bike? Bicycling Magazine has called this party of the country one of the "five top bicycle areas in the nation". If you're around the region between the 30th of May and June 5th you'll be able to enjoy the Trans-Sylvania Mountain Bike Epic at State College and in the Raystown Lake Region. This seven day, seven stage event combines single track races, off roading, and mountain roads.
