Vacation Activities in Destin Florida When Fishing Isn't Your Thing

Destin Florida, located on Florida's Emerald coast, is a picturesque city named after Captain Destin who settled there in the mid-19th century. The city's history, however, can be traced farther back, suggesting that life on the current site has existed for several millennia. In the 1970s and 1980s, the city began to emerge with the construction of multiple condominiums. The area has evolved from a modest fishing village into one of the leading tourist destinations in America. Authorities estimate that Destin now has over 4 million visitors annually, which is amazing given that the local population is only about 10,000 people year round.

People travel to and vacation in Destin Florida because of the extraordinarily white beaches made of ultra-finely ground quartz, and the emerald-colored water. This beautiful town also offers lots of other activities, including about a dozen water parks.

Destin is widely known as "the world's luckiest fishing village." For die-hard fishermen and women, this is a challenge that can't be overlooked. For an affordable fee, anyone can charter one of hundreds of fishing vessels and, at least for awhile, be part of the rich fishing fraternity. However, for those who prefer other activities, the area provides other enjoyable and exciting options.

Snorkeling is one of the more popular off-shore options because the clear emerald-colored water makes it easy to catch a glimpse of manta rays, vibrant yellow angelfish and loggerhead sea turtles, as well as other tropical-water flora and fauna. It's a fun and educational activity for the whole family. The more adventurous love to rent jet skis to explore both the bay and the gulf. The riders are rewarded with a flawless view of the shoreline along with the opportunity to explore various nooks and crannies along the coast.

Other activities on the water include parasailing, or afternoon and evening sailing trips on one of the boats rented out. There are small boats that accommodate just a few people, or larger boats that can seat larger groups. Dolphins and other popular sea life are often seen swimming in and around the boats. Special evening cruises offer wine and cheese - there are even dinner trips available.

If you prefer to stay on land, this diverse city has two shopping malls, the Silver Sands Outlet Mall, which is allegedly America's largest designer outlet, and Destin Commons, an open-air mall and host to a multitude of shops and a multi-screen cinema. Visitors can also rent bicycles to tour the area at their leisure. Of course, restaurants and seafood for every taste and budget abound, especially since the local catch is rich and diverse.

Accommodations in Destin Florida are available in many styles and price points, from low-cost motels to expensive villas, and everything in between. Special rates are often offered for extended or mid-week stays. Of course, all the big-name hotel chains can be found, but families and large groups often prefer the comforts and convenience of renting a condo or house, since they feel more like a home away from home, with all the conveniences a home can offer. These are usually fully equipped with linens and towels, and a fully stocked kitchen for cooking.

While there are many accommodations that permit dogs, the Destin beaches do not permit them to run loose on the beaches, so perhaps it is better to leave Fido at home for this vacation. Or stay in one of the rentals that has dog run areas on site, so your pet gets plenty of exercise, too.
