Natural light and lighting is by far the best for taking wildlife and nature photos. Sure the photo shoot can always be done in a studio under "fake" or artificial lights and lighting . Yet the final results when they pass the sniff or photo snap shot reality test are never near as good or perfect Pets whether dogs or cats are usually most agreeable to be propped up as photo subjects. They seem to enjoy the attention. Indeed they can be real hams. Future movie stars at heart it is sometimes said in the photo trade according to expert photographer Riteway Strokon. In order to coerce the best shots some of the time it is a matter of being at the right place at the right time. Timing is 99 % of much of wildlife and nature photography successful and memorable results. The sinister looking toad can often be photographed on a piece of clear glass with a light source underneath. Black backgrounds have helped quite a few budding professional as well as amateur photographers to create both a dramatic as well as most memorable nature or wildlife photo. One place not thought of by many are settings such as local pet shops. One budding photographer Wrongway Sodoma even used as a backdrop the large aquarium at his local Winnipeg Manitoba casino. Once there though he bumped into his poker buddy from burger king moe brown. Many available landscape and apparently natural wildlife photo subjects can be on hand simply by calling by phone and making an arrangement with local city zoological society. The zoological society or your photographic club may even arrange staging days and events. Farming is not the conventional cows , horses , chickens and pigs it once was. Now local farming often involved more exotic animals such as ostrich , emu , buffalo or bison. Some farm and feed operations even raise captive wild animals and birds for zoos and private collections. The story is told of one friend who took several days on a trip to carefully tame a small ground rodent. It took his friend no more than a minute of scaring the animal to remove all trust with the budding photographer. More exotic animals and fauna can be found in most zoos and for more money and time safari or for those with less spare cash - safari or in Manitoba "hunting" or "game " parks. Consult the zoological dept of your local university or college for specific information on feeding and browsing habits and preferences. No doubt about it , a wide open awake active animal will make the best photo subject or set of subjects. Is a standard pattern well known among animal photo buffs - Just try to find a photo subject after the creatures of the wild have finished eating or browsing. Its as if they melt away camouflaged into the background or foreground of the forest or lake side. Framing of pictures is important in the workup. An open field , stream or lake always makes for the best photo background. To better meld the subject into a blurred and distant background simply increase the camera lenses depth of field by keeping the focus the same , yet decreasing the shutter speed. Changing from 1/60th of a second to a 500th or even 1/ 1000 will always do the trick. Experts have stated to novices that with planning and forethought that even in the most constrained shoots of a city zoo , it can be arranged so that none of the resulting photos show indications little different than those taken in the actual wild and wilds of the world. Lastly a long focus lens can be an invaluable accessory for nature photo shoots. Use closed up and at a fairly wide aperture it can even render a wire mesh invisible. So there.
