The majority of DIY duties may be performed by women this bank holiday weekend, claims a new study. Research by thecaliforniacompany.co.uk revealed that most women were secure in entering the stereotypically male dominated domain of DIY jobs. The shutter company found that nine out of ten women said that they own a power tool and most were confident enough to use them as 67 per cent claimed that they did the DIY themselves. Furthermore, a significant number of women are picking up the slack left by men as 41 per cent admitted to finishing off an incomplete DIY task around the house. Sam Tamlyn, of the online shutter retailer.co.uk, said: "Women are undoubtedly no longer intimated by home improvement and are finding the confidence to give it a go themselves. "Many manufacturers now offer a range of products designed specifically for this rapidly growing audience with everything from lighter weight hammers to floral tool sets." Women may still benefit from undertaking practical training such as plastering courses, carpentry courses and tiling courses because the survey also found that females are slower at doing DIY compared to their male counterparts. Over two thirds of women confessed that it usually takes over four weeks to finish DIY jobs in comparison to the 48 per cent of men who claimed that they complete DIY tasks within a week. The study found that younger women were less likely to carry out DIY work as only a third of females aged between 16 and 26 said that they did DIY jobs and over 83 per cent claimed that they preferred to be involved with concept and style. Women in their thirties are more practical as 70 per cent said that they performed DIY and 63 per cent thought that DIY tasks were the responsibility of both males and females. Older women in their forties are true DIY devotees with 71 per cent actively taking part in practical work around the house and 95 per cent owning the appropriate tools. The majority of women in their fifties are happy to do DIY but are less confident doing it solo as 74 per cent claimed that they prefer to assist in an operation rather than carrying it out themselves. More men may benefit from taking decorating courses as the survey found that 48 per cent of males said that they like to get involved with the design concept and styling side of creating a new room.
