Copyright (c) 2010 Nadine Davis The convenience of artificial grass is readily apparent to most of us; after all, it doesn't need to be watered, cut or maintained. However, when you go to buy it you may be put off by its initial expense. Before changing your mind, you need to seriously consider how much money it will save you over the long haul. It's already clear to see that there are huge benefits to synthetic or artificial lawns and those key benefits are going to become more and more clear in the near future, in particular noticing water rate rises. Residential artificial turf is child friendly. The artificial grass surface has non-abrasive soft fibers, which are an ideal playing surface. Bugs, ants and other crawling insects tend to make their home elsewhere as there is no natural food source. It is pet friendly too. The fake grass for dogs allows for easy clean up and a quick hose down to get rid of any mess, dogs can't dig holes in your lawn as they do with natural turf. Even the look and feel of artificial turf is just like grass and it stays lush and green every day of the year. They even use artificial turf for putting greens. Forget about trampling mud into the house when it is wet and it will no longer look like a dust bowl in the dry season. The UV stabilised turf will look great no matter what time of the year. Natural turf takes a lot of looking after, from weekly mowing, to watering, to feeding and fertilizing. All that time tidying the lawn instead of playing with the family, not to mention the on going costs. What are the overall costs of an artificial lawn? Residential water in Brisbane costs between $1.19 per kilolitre and $1.69 per kilolitre, depending on the volume of water used by the household. Currently in Brisbane, a family of five people, meeting the restriction of 140 litres per person each day, pays $444 per year with an access charge of $140 a year. The price of water will jump by at least $1.30 per week for people living in Brisbane under major changes announced by the State Government. The increase, which took effect July 1 2008, is to rise further each year for the next 10 years. Installing LTS Synthetic turf will save you significantly in both the short term and the long term. Within two year of installing your artificial turf at home, you will have recovered your costs and have started to save money when you compare it to the cost if you had installed a natural turf instead. Over a period of 15 years - the minimum life span of our high performance artificial turf - looking at an annual expense of a conservative $995.00 per year to maintain a natural lawn the expenditure is over $14,925.00 against the initial outlay of $3,300.00 The maintenance costs are very conservative and may be much higher depending on the size of lawn, the hardiness of the type of grass used and who services the lawn. If using a lawn service, the cost may be higher, if using DIY, running costs of the mower and other tools are taken into account, but still conservative. Taking into account the increasing costs of water and the higher maintenance aspects of natural turf, it makes a whole lot of sense to go with a maintenance free lawn made from artificial turf.
